We propose a tour of 7 days where we will visit, among others, two of the most important areas of ornithological interest of the Iberian Peninsula

1. EBRO DELTA (3 days)

DAY1:

You will start our tour with a three days stay at the Ebro Delta, the second largest wetland in the Iberian Peninsula. The first day we will visit the northern half of the Delta (northern sector of the Ebro River). The tour starts by visiting the beach of delta and a small lagoon, where we can watch Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), Black–tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa), Eurasian Curlew (Numerius arquata), Audouin’s Gull (Ichthyaetus audouinii) and also the Collared Pranticole (Glareola pratincola). After that, we will continue visiting the “Punta del Fangar”, a wide sandy beach where we will find a lot of Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus). In the afternoon we will stop in two important lagoons of Ebro Delta where we can see Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) and Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus).

DAY 2:

The second day we will visit the south half of Delta (southern sector of the Ebro River). During this day we will be dedicated to visit the lagoon of “Alfacada” and at the same time we can see the impressive “Isla de Buda” lagoons. Then we will visit grass plains between the rice cultived areas, where we will have the opportunity to observe rare birds like Buff-breasted Sandpiper (Tryngites subruficollis) and Eurasian Dotterel (Charadrius morinellus) during the migrations, and also Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). We will finish the day with a visit to a little lagoon under the management of the Spanish Society of Ornithology, and where the bird watching it’s very comfortable due to the proximity between the centre and the lagoon. In this area it is easy to see very close Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), extensively present in all this Natural Park.

DAY 3:

We will focus this day to the south half part of the Delta. We will visit one of the most unique habitats in the Natural Park, the salt flats, the best place to observe Caspian Tern (Hydroprogne caspia), Slender-billed Gull (Chroicocephalus genei) and Lesser Short-toed Lark (Calandrella rufescens). After to visit to the salt flats we will go to the beach again and we will end up visiting the both bigger lagoons in all Delta, like “Tancada” and “Encanyissada”, where it is easy to watch Piet Avoce (Recurvirostra avosetta) and big flocks of Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus).

2. “PUERTOS DE BESEIT” (1 day)

DAY 4:

East of Ebro Delta we will find the “Puertos de Beseit”, an important Mediterranean rocky mountains system which plenty of ravines and Mediterranean scrubs. On the rocks we will watch Common Rock Thrush (Monticola saxatilis) and Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius). The most notorious rapacious bird in this zone is the Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata) and Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).

3. “PLANA DE LLEIDA (1 Day)

DAY 5:

On the way to the Monegros (Aragón), we will stop at the “Plains of Lleida”. During the morning we will visit the arable fields of Tarrega, unique place in all Catalonia where is breeding Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus). During the afternoon we will visit the “Utxesa” marsh (Segre River). The main objective of this visit is to watch Bearded Reedling (Panurus biarmicus) and Eurasian Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus), because is the best place in Catalonia to watch them.

4. MONEGROS (2 days)

DAY 6:

The first day of this part of the program will be focused to visit the East sector in the Monegros. In this area the semi-desert steppes are very common with a lot of abandoned cottages and cultived dry lands. In semi-desert steppes is very easy to watch Pin-tailed Sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata), Black-beilled Sandgrouse (Pterocles orientais), Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax), Calandra Lark (Melanocorypha calandra), Greater Short-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla), Lesser Short-toed Lark (Calandrella rufescens) and Thekla Lark (Galerida theklae).

One of the more difficult birds to watch in this tour is Dupont’s Lark (Chersophilus duponti) and it’s for this reason that we will visit the best area in Monegros to do it. In the isolated farmhouse we will found European Roller (Coracias garrulus), Little Owl (Athene noctua) and Eurasian Hoope (Upupa epops). In the scrubs is very popular Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata), Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undata) and Woodchat Shrike (Lanius sentaor). Outside of the towns of the region we will find different steep dry slopes where it’s not difficult to watch Black Wheatear (Oenenthe leucura) and in the rocky cliffs in winter it’s possible to see the Wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria).

DAY 7:

The tour will continue to the central zone of the Monegros. Our main target will be to watch Great Bustard (Otis tarda), the bigger steppe bird in Europe. In this zone we also can see Great Spotted Cuckoo (Clamator glandarius) and Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus). In winter, it’s a good site to observe Short-eared Owl (Asio flameus).
