During spring time is when nesting species begin to mate and build nests. In the lagoons Natural Park we can be seen playing the Garganey (Anas querquedula), the Little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) and the Purple Swanphem (Porphyrio porhyrio). Also breeds the Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), very rare species in Catalonia. Between March and April the Little Crake (Porzana parva) and the Spoteed Crake (Crake porzana) can do, with a little luck, in the various gaps. In the reeds we can watch the Savi’s Warbler (Locustella luscinioides) and the Eurasian Penduline tit bird (Remiz pendulinus), and raptors such as Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus). Next to the park headquarters and riparian forest we found breeding colony of White Stork (Ciconia ciconia). Itâ€™s a perfect habitat to see the Lower Pito (Dendrocopos minor) and the Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla). During the night we can hear the Eurasian Scops Owl (Otus scops). The Natural Park has a long beach where breeding the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus). Around the park, agricultural landscape with cereal crops and isolated houses shows the Roller European (Coracias garrulus), the Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epops), the European Bee-eater (Merops Merops), the Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa), the European Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus), the Little Owl (Athene noctua) and Great Spotted Cuckoo (Clamator glandarius). Also nests the Greater Short-toed lard (Calandrella brachydactyla).
During summer we can watch the most adult birds and juveniles. It is good time to observe non-breeding summer species or scarce in the Natural Park as Squacco (Ardeola ralloides), Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber), Pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) and the Slender-billed Gull (Larus genei). On the beach is easy to watch the European Shag (Phalacrocorax Aristotelis) and flooded fields, hopefully, Temminck’s Stint (Calidris temminckii), the Eurasian dotterel (Charadrius morinellus) and some individual isolated Black Stork (Ciconia nigra).
Autumn is a good time to watch birds in migration and the arrival of the first wintering. In the lagoons with water, you can observe the Red-breasted merganser (Mergus serrator), the Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), the Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus), the Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), the Jack Snipe (Lymnocryptes minumus) and the Temminck’s Stint (Calidiris temminckii). During autumn migration we can observed groups Common Cranes (Grus grus) flying over the natural park on their way to the south.
It is the time that there are most number of birds in the park. A high population of ducks and waders arriving from the countries of central and northern Europe and spend the winter in the Aiguamolls del EmpordĂ . In the margins of the lagoons or sludge in the flooded fields we watch the Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa). In riparian forests are the Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica). Winter is also the best time for bird watching at the beach. At sea you can see groups of Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus) and different species of Loons (Gavia sp.). In the surrounding agricultural areas there are groups of Northern Lapwings (Vanellus Vanellus) and itâ€™s not rare the presence of Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) and some individual isolated Richard Pipit (Anthus Richardi).
